Jujubinus karpathoensis Nordsieck, 1973
SE. Aegean…
Grazer in the upper infralittoral.
2-3m deep, Kárpathos island, Dodecanese. 4,5mm.

The shell has a small size for the genus. It « recalls J. gravinae with which it shares the general aspect, and in particular the evident and rippled peripheral cord; the two taxa are clearly related, and we cannot exclude that they are synonyms. It is not common in the Aegean Sea, yet specimens under this names are frequently found in the collections also from other Mediterranean areas. We assume that all records of J. karpathoensis from outside the Aegean Sea are misidentifications. Two other species have a similarly rippled peripheral cord, namely J. vexationis and J. errinae; both exhibit the rippled cord only on the first 2-3 teleoconch whorls, while J. karpathoensis (like J. gravinae) [bear this feature] on all teleoconch whorls. » – Mariottini & al.: “Integrative taxonomy of northeastern Atlantic top-shells of the genus Jujubinus Monterosato, 1884 (Gastropoda, Trochidae, Cantharidinae)”, European Journal of Taxonomy vol. 1044, march 2026, p.65.
13m deep, Myrtos, west of Ierápetra, Lassíthi, SE. Crete. 4mm. Original pictures provided by A. Nappo (IT) – (CC BY-NC-SA). The red sections of the spiral cords are stronger and less numerous than those present on Jujubinus errinae. Another difference: the white blotches of karpathoensis are less blurred that in errinae.
