Diplodonta rotundata (Montagu, 1803)
British Isles and Azores to Mediterranean, in muddy sands of the circalittoral down to the continental shelf. Introduced in Red Sea (antilessepsian). Sometimes found in very shallow water (Thermaik Gulf, NE. Aegean at 0,2-5m, by T. Manousis). Original taxon: Tellina rotundata. Synonym: barleei.
2m deep, Saronic Gulf, SE. Greece. 10,5mm.
The shell is medium-sized, thin, solid, not very tumid, with the beaks anteriorly placed. The outline, subcircular, gives its name to the species. Sculpture made up of commarginal growth lines and, eventually, stops. Colour white to yellowish.

Washed ashore, Playa de la Canaleta, Punta Umbria, Huelva, SW. Andalucia, SW. Spain. 17,1-21,2mm.
The hinge, with the bifid cardinals that are typical of the genus, in some valves collected on the Platja de la Devesa, Parc Natural de l’Albufera, Comunitat Valenciana, E. Spain.
